Japanese Paper Cutting // Poster Series
I was challenged with conceptualizing and creating a poster series for a hypothetical art exhibit. Inspired by Japanese paper cutting, I designed three posters depicting images with great significance to the culture: a koi, an octopus, and a crane. Each image was digitally drawn in Illustrator, and a laser cutter was used to achieve the delicate and strategic pops of color. The top layer was selected from the Neenah collection; its weight needed to accommodate cutting, bending, and subtle layers. The bottom layer was chosen based on color to individualize each poster. Vinyl was applied to emboss the Japanese characters and the artist’s name, creating further texture and emphasis.
